What ingredients should I avoid when cooking for a person with High Cholestrol?
Uhm.. Hi. I'm a 14 year old girl, and I'm visiting my dad for Christmas. He hasn't been doing a good job with cooking himself and he has a problem with MSG.. , he has high cholesterol too. I'm really worried about his health, and I wanted to cook for him instead of going out to eat. What types of food should he avoid? or ingredients that i should avoid when i cook?

- What a good daughter you are! Your Dad is so lucky to have someone like you. Check with your Dad about his likes and dislikes. Remember to go easy on beef and pork dishes. Watch the eggs. Try eating meat as more of an accent rather than the main course. For example make up a stir-fry using bits of meat or try making a vegetable soup with meat in it. Use egg beaters or that equivalent. Eat fish. Fish twice a week is good for you. Eat more oatmeal. Avoid processed foods. They contain a lot of salt and MSG. I forgot to add: Eat more fruits and veggies. They'll help round out the meal and fill you up.
- You are truly a sweet daughter to be concerned with your dad's health. My husband's doctor told him to eat fish instead of meat. Meat has fat in it. The doc told him to eat meats only once or twice per month. Here is a "How to Cook Fish In Foil" video for you. There is a very short ad. http://video.about.com/busycooks/Cook-Fish-in-Foil.htm
- Red meat, eggs, and high fat dairy products are all no-no's if you are watching your cholesterol. Make sure you use olive oil when cooking and use plenty of garlic as well. Olive oil raises the "good" (HDL) cholesterol, which is just as important as having your "bad" (LDL) cholesterol go down. Garlic has been proven to reduce LDL cholesterol, plus it adds flavor to your food. Skinless chicken breast, fish, fresh vegetables, and fruits are all good choices. Make sure he gets plenty of dietary fiber from whole grain foods like oatmeal, whole grain breads, whole grain pastas, and brown rice. This fiber has also been proven to reduce LDL cholesterol. I think you are very sweet for wanting to take care of your Dad. He's lucky to have a daughter like you.
- Anything that's high in fat.
- high cholesterol = avoid oily food. :) vegies = good oily meat = bad seafood = it depends as much as possible, he must avoid intake of fried meals. :) almost forgot, eggs are reaally high in cholesterol. its probably the one you should avoid.
