Cholesterol Cholestrol

Can somebody help me with this cholestrol question for biology?

Ok it said in a science book that MONOunsaturated and polyunsaturated fats lower LDL cholesterol levels, and so did some websites, however when I put monounsaturated fats lower cholesterol levels, i got it wrong and the correct answer was it has no effect, is this true?

  1. Saturated raise, monounsaturated cause no change, and polyunsaturated fats lower cholesterol has been the general approach. There is some evidence to suggest that monounsaturated fats will lower LDL cholesterol without lowering HDL cholesterol. I wish I could say there are simple answers, but this is a field fraught with conflicting studies. There is data to support your answer.
  2. LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol are not the same thing. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that are in cis configuration do decrease LDL cholesterol, but have little effect on total cholesterol because they tend to increase HDL cholesterol. Trans fats and saturated fats increase LDL and total cholesterol. There may be some disagreement regarding how much polyunsaturated fats lower cholesterol because other factors will affect the cholesterol level and it is sometimes difficult to eliminate these factors from a research study.
