- decrease your intake of animal products -eat in moderation only. increase your fruit, vegetable, soy, and whole grain intake. don't forget to exercise. it's a life style change, so don't just change yourself -include the entire family.
- Cholesterol gets in your body 2 ways. 1. manufactured in the liver 2. in food You can't really cut it down by eating low cholesterol food because your body thinks it has a natural level of cholesterold to maintain so it steps up production and you are back to the same level. You can burn it off by excercise and you can eat a low fat diet to maintain a good body shape which will reduce cholerstorol damage to the arteries combined with the overall effects of being fat. About normal ranges I will leave it to lots of other answerers who will want to give you their HDL/LDL good cholesterol/bad cholesterol lecture.
- You can definitely decrease your cholesterol levels by changing your diet alone -- I did. Lots of people say that you should try for a total cholesterol under 200, but I think 150 is probably even better, because people can still have heart attacks between 150 and 200. Good foods to eat are: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Avoid cholesterol (only in animal products) and fats, especially saturated and trans fats. Exercise can help.
